City manager reports: Railroad derailment notified officials; Railroad Park and BK expansion projects underway

City Manager Garrett told the council he received notice from Kern County about a train derailment west of Tehachapi and that county and local emergency services responded.
Garrett said he was notified by Kern County Chief Aaron Duncan that a derailment occurred near Caliente and that county dispatch and local fire responded. "There is no rule that that says the railroad has to contact locals," Garrett said, noting federal regulation of railroads and the importance of timely notification so local emergency services can react. He praised the county and railroad for notifying 911 on this occasion and said the city’s fire department and county engaged appropriately.
Garrett also reported that the Railroad Park revitalization began with tree trimming and removal of unhealthy trees, and that upgrades to sprinklers and electrical systems will follow in coming months. He said contractor agreements for the BK expansion project are in place and construction has started, with safety fencing installed on the rear side of the site.
Council members and staff noted ongoing coordination with the county, the community theater association and private donors on event-center projects and public-safety planning. Garrett thanked Kern County officials and emergency responders for their quick engagement on the derailment.
