The Tehachapi City Council adopted a proclamation recognizing February 2025 as Safe Surrender Baby Awareness Month and thanked the county-led coalition and local pregnancy centers for outreach to families in crisis.
Development Services Director Jay introduced the item and invited Dee Zimmerman to accept the proclamation on behalf of the Safely Surrendered Baby Coalition and local pregnancy centers. "When there are safe places for these women to go, we're grateful," Dee Zimmerman said, describing three pregnancy centers in Kern County and the coalition's work to de-escalate crises and make surrender options known.
Council members praised the partnership with the county and charities. During council reports, a speaker said Kern County has recorded 103 safely surrendered babies since February 2006 and that the statewide total is about 1,400; those counts were presented by meeting participants as background information rather than as a council finding.
The council and the guest posed for a photo with the proclamation; staff said they will continue outreach to raise awareness of the Safely Surrendered Baby Law and local surrender sites.
