Council sets public hearing for rail extension in Le Mars Industrial Park

The Le Mars City Council voted to set a public hearing for the 2025 Le Mars Industrial Park rail extension project and to establish a procurement schedule. The project, for which ISG prepared plans, will extend track across 20 Seventh Street Southwest and the full 500-foot depth of Le Mars Industrial Park Fourth Addition.
Administration presented a project estimate of $504,245 to be funded with TIP. A council member questioned the cost and asked whether ISG has performed rail extension work before and whether the railroad would perform its own work; staff and council discussed that the city owns the spur (not the main line) and that the city uses railroad standards for construction. One council member said ISG has a division that does rail work and described related past local investments in rail infrastructure.
The council established a public hearing for March 4, 2025 at 12 p.m., set a bid opening for March 25, 2025 at 10 a.m., and listed an April 1, 2025 meeting to consider award. A motion to set the hearing and procurement dates carried on a voice vote: "All those in favor say aye" and the chair recorded the motion carried.
