The St. Francis Area Schools Board of Education completed its organizational business at a public meeting, electing a new board chair, confirming vice-chair and treasurer posts, keeping most committee assignments and approving annual compensation and the board's 2025 meeting calendar.
Justice West was nominated and elected board chair. After being chosen, West said, “I'm excited to work collaboratively with all of you to continue to advance this district for our students, our staff, our community.” Jill Anderson served as acting chair until the election was completed.
The board moved next to nominations for vice chair and treasurer. Nominations were made from the floor and the board confirmed the slate of officers; the record shows the nominations and ballots were completed as part of the organizational process.
On compensation, the board voted to retain the 2024 rates for annual board member compensation, negotiation meeting rates and mileage reimbursement. That motion carried 6-1.
The board approved its 2025 regular meeting schedule and said it will follow Minnesota state statute for required public notice of regular and special meetings. The board also discussed months with multiple meetings (December, March, July) and agreed to list them as regular meetings subject to later conversion to workshops where appropriate.
Members discussed 18 committee and liaison assignments. After conversations about whether to retain a facilities committee and an activities/advisory committee, the board voted to keep both committees in place for now and to revisit the structure during the year. The board instructed staff to maintain interim assignments for committees scheduled to meet before the next regular meeting.
Board chair and staff emphasized that committee assignments are public meetings when they include board members and must follow public-notice rules. Chair-elect and administrators said they will follow up with members individually to finalize assignments and time commitments.
The actions taken at the organizational portion of the meeting set leadership, meeting cadence and committee responsibilities for the coming year and included routine housekeeping decisions meant to preserve continuity while leaving room to reevaluate committee structures later in the calendar year.
Ending
The board moved from organizational items to consent and action items, with the newly elected chair calling the remainder of the agenda. No additional action on officer selection or committee structure was recorded later in the meeting.
