Resident urges more sidewalks and pathways; commissioners flag trails for evacuation and quality-of-life

Sandra West spoke during citizens' comments at the Kodiak Island Borough Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Wednesday, Feb. 19, urging the borough and city to make neighborhoods more walkable by adding sidewalks and pathways.
"If we had sidewalks, kids can ride their bikes and run, and you could push strollers on sidewalks," West said, adding that pathways can be a lower-cost option where full sidewalks are not feasible.
Commissioners acknowledged West's comment during commissioner remarks. Commissioner Mangini noted the input was timely because the commission is working on the borough comprehensive plan. Several commissioners said trails and pathways not only improve quality of life but also can serve in emergency management as evacuation routes for downtown Kodiak in the event of tsunami or earthquake alarms.
Commissioners encouraged continued community input as the comprehensive plan work progresses and thanked West for attending the meeting to raise the issue.
