Boerne updates City Park playground expansion after $155,000 community fundraising

City staff updated the Boerne City Council on Jan. 14 about an expansion of the City Park playground funded through a public–private partnership with the Boerne Parks Association.
Lisette Jimenez said the playground project began as an idea in 2023; the Boerne Parks Association launched fundraising in 2024 and raised $155,000 in about 12–14 months. The city’s playground vendor, Playwell, is contracted to provide new equipment. Jimenez said work already under way includes removal of existing mulch and equipment to prepare for poured-in-place surfacing. New features will include an inclusive swing set, a friendship spinner, an inclusive ability spinner, three musical instruments aimed at sensory engagement and a 12-foot sensory board. Jimenez said the playground is being developed “in honor of” Amy Palacio, who inspired the fundraising effort.
City staff said the goal is to complete the project in spring, but installation depends on weather: some items require temperatures “higher than 40 degrees” to install. Ben (city staff) noted that the Parks Association’s success on this project has prompted discussions about amenities at other parks. There was no formal council action recorded for the playground update at this meeting.
