Board assigns members to committees after contentious nominations; concerns about marginalization voiced

After electing board leadership, the Lansing Board of Education moved through committee appointments for the year, approving membership for negotiations, facilities and transportation, student and staff recognition, wellness, long-range strategic planning, safety and policy review.

Several committee votes drew extended discussion and recorded objections. Trustees debated who should serve on negotiations and whether nominees could attend required state negotiation training. A trustee recused herself from negotiations votes because a family member works for the district, and at least two members said they would not participate in negotiations for the same reason. Trustees repeatedly asked whether nominees could attend mandated training before voting.

Voting produced a mix of outcomes across committees; some appointments were approved over objections recorded as concerns about “lack of collaboration and marginalization of members who vote differently.” One trustee asked that her no votes be recorded with that rationale.

The board also discussed training timing and legal requirements for committee members and asked staff to confirm attendance availability for mandated sessions. Several trustees urged that committees be structured to ensure two members so representation is preserved when someone cannot attend.
