Redford Union board adopts public communication guidelines; approves $76,448 CTE computer purchase and Section 127 education-assistance plan

The Redford Union Schools Board of Education voted Sept. 9 to adopt new public communication guidelines, approve the purchase of 64 Dell desktop computers for secondary-campus CTE and general classroom labs at a cost of $76,448, and create a Section 127 educational assistance program to deliver grant-funded loan-repayment benefits to qualifying employees.

The Section 127 educational assistance program was explained by Mike Belting, chief financial officer, who said the district plans to set up the federal Section 127 plan so up to $5,250 of educational assistance can be paid tax free per eligible employee. Belting said the district received an approximately $45,000 one-time state grant last year and currently has 11 active participants; the first grant-funded payments will be processed on the Sept. 28 payroll at $200 per month until the grant funds are exhausted. "We have an obligation to pay this out," Belting said, describing the administrative step as a way to deliver the grant-funded benefit without additional district-funded expense. The board approved the creation of the Section 127 plan by roll call vote, 6-0.
