Willis ISD board approves HVAC disposal, 9th-grade delivery method, kitchen smallwares and employee makeup-day waiver

On the disposal item, district staff told trustees that three Carrier HVAC units removed during Lynn Lucas Mill School renovations are no longer operational. The district received an offer from Coastal Recovery to buy the three units for a total of $10,000, which includes pickup. Staff said they had sought a fair-market estimate from an auctioneer service and were told an auction estimate would be about $1,000 per unit; staff recommended accepting Coastal Recovery's offer as appropriate. Trustee Chad Jones moved to accept the superintendent's recommendation; Trustee Scott Carson seconded and the motion carried (vote tally not specified on the record for this item).
Trustees approved using the construction-manager-at-risk (CMAR) delivery method for the Willis High School 9th-grade campus and delegated authority to the superintendent to negotiate the contract after ranking professionals. Trustee Jones moved, Trustee Carson seconded; the board approved the recommendation 5-0.
The board also approved moving forward with procurement of cafeteria smallwares for Calvi (Kelsey) Middle School. Staff said three quotes were solicited through the Region 5 cooperative — Acemart, First Choice and Commercial Kitchens — and recommended awarding to Commercial Kitchens as the lowest quote. Trustee Scott Carson moved to accept the superintendent's recommendation and Trustee Cliff Williams seconded; trustees recorded the motion as carried by a 5-0 vote.
Finally, trustees voted to waive makeup workdays for employees for Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, and Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, and to pay full compensation to employees, including those with positions that require emergency reporting (260-day employees). Trustee Jones moved and Trustee "Mister Carey" seconded; the motion carried 5-0.
The board convened into closed session for attorney consultation under Texas Government Code 551.071 and returned to open session with no public motions reported from closed session. The next board meeting was announced for Feb. 12, 2025, with a TAPR (Financial Transparency) session from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and a regular meeting at 5:30 p.m.
