Board reviews 2020 bond projects, bus canopy and community center furniture; bids to open Wednesday

District staff updated the Caledonia Community Schools Board of Education on several bond-related projects at the board's Nov. 18 meeting and said multiple public bid openings are scheduled this week.
Staff presented three items that remain active under the 2020 voter-approved bond: a building-wide renovation for Caledonia Elementary School (floors, paint, lighting, ceilings and remaining systems not covered by prior work), a bus-canopy structure to protect the transportation fleet and a second furniture package for the Cal Community Center (the first package was previously approved for YMCA offices). Staff said bid openings for portions of the 2020 bond package are scheduled for Wednesday and that the board will receive updated cost figures after the bid results.
On the elementary renovation, staff said initial plans complement earlier Revit/HVAC renovations completed in a prior phase; because bids had not yet closed the report to the board was intentionally incomplete and will be updated as bids are received. For the transportation canopy, staff said the structure is designed to protect the front portion of each bus from winter weather, allow faster bus warm-up and permit relocation of block-heater electrical connections under cover. Staff noted the canopy will not cover the entire fleet but that the district will cover as many bus spaces as funding allows.
The furniture package under discussion is intended for the Cal Resource Center offices within the community center; staff said they are finalizing selections with the furniture vendor and estimated costs based on the three proposals then on hand.
Finance and timing: Finance staff told the board the district will request authorization next month to issue the second and final series of the voter-approved 2023 bond and to refund callable 2014 bonds; preliminary analysis shows estimated taxpayer savings of roughly 1.5 percent, but staff said a final savings number will be available when the refunding pricing is set. Staff also said they will present updated bid results and recommended contract actions at a future meeting.
Why it matters: The bond projects affect school facilities, bus operations and the community center that will host district and community services. Because the projects depend on competitive bids, final scope and cost are still subject to change.
Next steps: Bid openings will occur Wednesday; staff will update the board with bid results and bring any contract awards or bond-issuance authorizations back to the board for approval.
