Council approves five‑lot 'Augustus Corner' subdivision; Macalester rezoning and other land items set for later hearings

The St. Paul City Council voted to approve a final plat that subdivides a corner parcel in the Union Park neighborhood into five residential lots, allowing five detached single-family homes to be built under the developer's plan.
City planner Katie Dadless told the council the "Augustus Corner" plat creates five lots from three current parcels, preserves an existing brownstone retaining wall where possible, and requires several variances including a 5-foot pedestrian easement that crosses two lots and a 3-foot house-number easement for lots that do not front a street. Staff recommended approval of the variances and final plat after review by planning staff and the Union Park District Council.
Developer representatives said they moved and restored an architecturally significant house on the site and designed five detached houses to fit the block's character. John Mather of Equinox Construction said, "We have been working in the city of St. Paul for over 40 years...We came up with a plan and a house that looks like the houses in the neighborhood. And we would like to go ahead and build those." The council adopted the resolution approving the plat (vote recorded in the meeting as 7–0).
Separately, Item 26, a rezoning application by Macalester College to adjust several parcels along Grand Avenue and McAllister Street, was called for public hearing; no speakers appeared and the council laid that matter over to Jan. 22 for final adoption. The council also accepted a U.S. Department of Transportation grant of $805,139 and established the budget for the award.
