Sunnyside honors CTE teachers; Betsy Bruce Foundation donates $20,000 to AVID and student programs

Terrence, an eighth‑grade AVID teacher at Sierra K‑8, described how the Betsy Bruce Foundation’s contributions enabled university visits and program support. He said the foundation provided $8,000 in the first year, $10,000 last year and this year’s largest gift, $20,000, and that funds have also supported Folklorico, mariachi and wrestling teams for travel and tournament expenses. Betsy Bruce told the board she shifted to local giving to make greater impact and said she would continue the support.
Mario Castro, Sunnyside’s director for career and technical education, told the board 15 of the district’s 26 CTE programs earned the state’s distinguished designation after a multi‑year documentation and monitoring process. He said the state review included compliance and a higher distinguished level for programs that provided evidence of extensive student opportunities such as work‑based learning, certifications, dual enrollment and industry ties. Castro and the board named instructors and said the district will produce classroom banners recognizing the designation.
The board recognized a student, Aaron Moreno of Santa Clara Elementary, for community kindness work and a student safety‑patrol role; staff noted the CTE and donor recognitions were accompanied by student performances and presentations during the meeting.
The recognitions were ceremonial; no board action was required.
