Santa Rosa — Fire Chief Scott Westrope told the Public Safety Subcommittee on Thursday that the department is filling vacancies, advancing construction of a new fire station and taking delivery of several apparatus while continuing to monitor operational performance.
Westrope said departmentwide funded full-time positions on the control list moved from 169 FTE down to 165 FTE following budget reductions, while the department continues to operate 12 SAFER-funded paramedic positions. He reported three vacant operational positions but said there is an academy of six recruits in training who are expected to join the field in about three weeks.
On facilities, Westrope said concrete work for Fire Station 5 is under way. Fire Station 8 is in the design phase with no fixed start or completion date yet. He said two recently delivered engines are in service and that five additional Type 1 engines remain on order. The department completed final inspection of Type 6 engines and expected them to ship to Santa Rosa later in the week.
Westrope said a ladder truck on order has an expected delivery date in 2028. He also said squads funded by the public-safety and prevention sales-tax measure continue to respond to 110–130 calls per week; the department plans to present comparative response-time data at the next subcommittee meeting.
No public comments were offered during the fire-department item, and no formal action was taken.
