The San Antonio City Council voted to approve sister-city agreements with Santiago de Querétaro (Mexico) and Lanzarote (Islas Canarias, Spain), measures city staff described as formalizing existing cultural, educational and economic exchanges.
Proponents, including local descendants and long-time organizers, traced historic links between San Antonio and the Canary Islands dating to the 18th century and noted prior exchanges with Mexican states and cities. Speakers said the agreements will enable student and cultural exchanges, civic delegations, shared museum and heritage projects and business promotion.
Councilmembers described earlier delegations and exhibitions as foundations for the agreements. The proposers emphasized the agreements are intended to be substantive — supporting exchanges of artists, students, researchers and small-business opportunities — and not merely ceremonial.
Action: Council approved the sister-city ordinances (agenda items 37 and 38). Several speakers from the Canary Islands’ descendant community and representatives of Querétaro addressed the council in support, noting longstanding historical links and prior exchange projects.
