The Conroe City Council authorized the mayor to sign an employment contract appointing Michael Varner as city attorney on Jan. 23, after a personnel committee recommended him to the council.
City staff told the council the committee had worked with Varner for more than a year in an interim capacity and found him qualified. "We have found him to be qualified to be our city attorney," a staff member said during the meeting, recommending that Varner be authorized as the next city attorney for Conroe.
The mayor moved to authorize the appointment and to allow the mayor to sign an employment contract. The council approved the motion by voice vote; no abstentions or oppositions were recorded on the public record.
The meeting record did not include the signed contract details, salary or an effective date. The council deferred agenda item 5 and proceeded with other business after the motion carried.
