New Halifax County commissioners sworn in; Vernon Bryant elected chair, Chenoa Richardson Davis vice chair

At an organizational meeting Dec. 2, Halifax County commissioners Jimmy Silver, Gary Redding and Thomas Barrett were sworn in. Commissioner Vernon Bryant was nominated and elected chair; Chenoa Richardson Davis was elected vice chair. The board also adopted the meeting agenda and approved the consent agenda.
Three newly elected members of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners were sworn in during the board’s organizational meeting on Dec. 2, and the board selected its leadership for the coming year.
County Attorney Lehi Rollins administered the organizational portion of the meeting and called Judge Turner Stevenson forward to assist with the oath. In order by district, Jimmy Silver, Gary Redding and Thomas E. Barrett Jr. each took the oath of office before the full board and audience.
The board then moved to select leadership. Commissioner Webb nominated Vernon Bryant as chair; Rollins said a second was not required under the board’s rules of procedure. The board voted unanimously in favor. Commissioner Webb nominated Chenoa Richardson Davis as vice chair; that nomination also passed unanimously.
The board adopted the meeting agenda by voice vote on a motion made by Vice Chair Davis and seconded by Commissioner Webb. The consent agenda, which included budget amendments and property tax refunds and releases for November 2024, was approved by voice vote on a motion by Vice Chair Davis and a second by Commissioner Barrett.
Members who spoke during the organizational portion thanked family and supporters. Newly sworn commissioners offered brief remarks about their priorities: Silver and Redding thanked supporters and referenced education and economic development; Barrett spoke about his commitment to the county.
The board recessed briefly after the organizational items and reconvened for the regular meeting.
