District reports 16 SSDS incidents in Sept–Dec period; 11 reported as "HIV" cases

District administrators presented the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) and related incident counts for period 1 (September through December) at the Feb. 11 Metuchen Board of Education meeting.
Dr. Pluto (district staff) said the district recorded 16 SSDS incidents in period 1: 0 at Moss, 0 at Campbell, 9 at Edgar Middle School and 7 at Metuchen High School. The presenter broke those down by incident type at Edgar as six related to violence, one substance incident, one weapons incident, two listed as "HIV confirmed," and one incident leading to removal (suspension). At the high school the presenter listed one violence incident, one vandalism, one substance incident and four others leading to removal.
On a related measure labeled "HIVs by school" the district reported 11 items (0 at Moss, 0 at Campbell, 9 at the middle school and 2 at the high school). Dr. Pluto said the district uses an internal disposition called "option g" when facts reported, even if true, would not meet the threshold for the district's HIV designation; the district invoked option g five times across the period (three at Edgar and two at the high school).
Officials said they would circulate the written report to the board on request. The presenter invited questions and offered to provide copies of the report to members who asked.
