The Cherryville City Council unanimously approved the minutes of its Nov. 11, 2024 regular meeting, the mayor announced that action at the start of the meeting.
Council members voted to move the February council meeting from the second Monday to the first Monday of the month at the same 6 p.m. start time; the motion passed unanimously with no opposing votes. The council also voted to cancel the work session scheduled for Dec. 31, citing no pressing items and the date falling on New Year's Eve; that motion passed unanimously.
The meeting included the council—s monthly "power players" recognitions for local student-athletes. Coaches and school staff recognized several students: Emily Adams was honored for volleyball after being named the team MVP; coaches recited her season statistics, the team—s 16-8 record and a state-playoff appearance. Morgan Ray was recognized for playing the No. 1 position on the girls— tennis team and earning first-team all-conference honors. The wrestling team—s junior, identified in the meeting as Pendleton (transcript references include Kevin, Caleb and Kayla Pendleton), was recognized; the coaches noted the wrestler—s state ranking, captaincy and role mentoring younger wrestlers. Council members asked that school representatives receive the city—s appreciation.
The council also heard short updates from the mayor, including completion of Phase 2 of a city cherry-tree planting program (82 trees planted), the nearing completion of the Larry and Carolyn Sumner Recreation Complex gym floor and playground work, an anticipated ribbon-cutting and grand opening, and community holiday events including the annual Christmas parade on Dec. 14 and the employee Christmas luncheon on Dec. 19.
