Utah Senate approves package of bills on property rights, consumer protection, licensing and law recodification

The Utah State Senate approved a group of bills on a variety of policy areas during a floor session, sending the measures to the House for consideration.

The package included an extension of the sunset on the information check for firearm sales to July 1, 2027 (Senate Bill 14); a bill aligning offender-registry provisions with the broader criminal-code recodification (Senate Bill 41, second substitute); a long-term disability benefit clarification for public employees (1st Substitute Senate Bill 22); consumer protection recodification and cleanup (Senate Bill 42); a standardization of professional licensure background checks and fingerprinting (Senate Bill 44); expedited remedies for unlawful residential occupancy (1st Substitute Senate Bill 55); and updates to rules about how insurance companies invest funds (Senate Bill 49). The Senate also advanced a bill requiring fiscal notes and publication standards for citizen initiatives (1st Substitute Senate Bill 73), which passed with recorded opposition.

Why it matters: Several of these measures change how state government handles consumer complaints, professional licensing, property-owner remedies and the technical alignment of criminal-code provisions with a major recodification effort. The votes move the bills to the House, where they will receive further consideration.
