Malcolm Bridge Elementary students describe after-school clubs; cafeteria manager Carrie Gibson honored

Students and staff from Malcolm Bridge Elementary presented on after-school clubs at the Oconee County Board meeting; Carrie Gibson, the school’s cafeteria manager, received the February Pursuit of Excellence Award.
At its Feb. 10 meeting the Oconee County Board of Education heard a presentation from Malcolm Bridge Elementary School highlighting after-school clubs and recognized the school nutrition manager, Carrie Gibson, as the February Pursuit of Excellence Award winner.
Jennifer Hagood, principal at Malcolm Bridge Elementary School, opened the presentation and said the after-school clubs “offer an invaluable chance for students to explore new interests, build essential life skills, and cultivate a sense of belonging within the school community.” Students from third to fifth grade then described clubs they had participated in this year.
Fifth-grader Eliza Roberts said of the Junior Beta Club: “Through participating in beta club, I learned more about how to be responsible and respectful and also how to help our community.” Karina Shaw, also a fifth grader, said the club helped her “learn to be a better person and take responsibility while also making the school a better place.”
Students described a range of activities: art club members staged a puppet show, podcast club students learned scripting and editing, MBTV broadcast club produced short videos for school events, chorus and drama students performed, and a new sourdough club taught baking and kitchen safety. Fourth-grader Scotty Farmer said of sourdough club, “I learned how to safely bake sourdough bread and how to be safe in the kitchen.”
The board also presented the February Pursuit of Excellence Award to Carrie Gibson, Rocky Branch Elementary’s cafeteria manager. The award package included a $50 Visa gift card and a golf umbrella provided by Peach State Federal Credit Union, additional gift cards from Chops and Hops and Rosie's Hometown Meats, and a commemorative plaque from Oconee County Schools. The board praised Gibson’s work introducing fifth graders to food preparation and emphasizing cleanliness and safety in the cafeteria.
Eric Watts, assistant principal at Malcolm Bridge Elementary School, told the board the extracurricular offerings were made possible by staff and stakeholder support and said the activities “push our students beyond the traditional borders.” Board members spoke briefly to commend the students and staff; one board member said he remembered the school’s early year with a single club and congratulated students for the expanded offerings.
The board did not take any formal action on the clubs during the meeting.
