The council considered the appointment of Elizabeth Wilkes to the city’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Advisory Commission during its Jan. 22 pre-meeting. Wilkes spoke briefly at the podium and described her priorities if confirmed.
“ I welcome the opportunity to partake with Newark and be a part of partnership… providing housing… and being visible, standing, and shouting tactful, but being, impactful,” Wilkes said.
Councilman Kelly asked whether recent federal action — he referenced an executive order — would affect her work; Wilkes replied that it affects the community broadly and that visibility and advocacy remain important. The nomination was sponsored by Councilman Kelly and seconded by Councilwoman Louise Scott Rountree. The pre-meeting record shows the sponsorship and seconding; no final roll-call vote was recorded in the pre-meeting portion of the transcript.
The council also noted an appointment to the Newark Parking Authority (Stephanie Matthews) who was not present and marked as not appearing; the clerk said the item could be returned if she appears later.
