Seaford family asks board to allow 6th-grader to return from BASE charter school

Sarah McQuaid Silva told the Seaford School District Board of Education on Jan. 21 that she and her husband are requesting the board approve re-enrollment of their daughter, Micaela, to her home district for the remainder of her sixth-grade year.
Silva said she submitted a release form from the student’s current school, the Bridal Allen Stevenson School of Excellence (BASE), along with a letter describing extenuating circumstances tied to the past five months. “We are here tonight to put faces to our request that the board approve for re enrollment to her home district from her current school,” Silva said.
The family said Micaela attended Seaford schools — including Spanish-immersion classes at Leeds and Frederick Douglass — from kindergarten through fifth grade and was “an exemplary student,” and they argued that returning her to Seabird Middle School would let her rejoin programs and supports she previously had. The family said they understand BASE may not release them from its charter contract without Department of Education involvement, and they asked the board to take the submitted paperwork and the child’s circumstances into account.
Board President Kimberly Hopkins acknowledged the comment period and thanked the family for bringing the matter to the board’s attention. No board action on the request was recorded during the meeting; Silva’s remarks were part of the public participation segment.
The family closed by thanking the board and superintendent for their time and consideration. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to be heard at this meeting,” Silva said.
