Public Works reports tree removals, new plantings and park improvements; Oster Park project under budget

Public Facilities provided a quarterly update to the Le Mars City Council on Jan. 7 outlining tree removal and planting, park repairs and convention center maintenance.
Public Facilities staff reported that of 370 ash trees identified on city property, 320 have been removed. The department planted 80 maple trees in locations where ash trees were removed and said 50 additional trees (locusts, oaks, Kentucky coffee trees, sugar and autumn maples) are scheduled to arrive this spring for further planting.
Staff said lighting was installed at the dog park with assistance from Mid America, a heavy-duty picnic table was fabricated for a shelter by the sand volleyball courts, and several playground and park repairs were completed. Oster Park’s new playground was installed and the project finished about $43,100 under budget.
Repairs and repainting were also completed in the convention center basement, including corner protection to address recurring damage; staff said additional landscaping work is planned this spring.
