Encinitas Youth Commission approves minutes, lays out early 2025 work plan and events

The Encinitas Youth Commission approved the minutes of its Dec. 4 regular meeting and discussed a work plan and calendar of volunteer and outreach activities for early 2025 during its Jan. 8 meeting. Vice Chair Kelly moved to approve the Dec. 4 minutes and Chair Leshinskie seconded; the commission voted unanimously to approve with eight ayes and one absence recorded.
Commission members reviewed a set of scheduled activities and ad hoc requirements. The commission confirmed a tour of the Pacific View Arts Center for Thursday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m.; the tour is mandatory for members of the ad hoc group and optional for other commissioners. The commission also confirmed a tech-tutoring event, in collaboration with the Senior Commission, set for Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon; youth commissioners were asked to volunteer to help seniors with basic device use.
Commissioners discussed habitat stewardship plans and said a restoration project is planned for February at the Moonlight Parcel (near Moonlight Beach tennis and pickleball courts), where volunteers will help with weed removal and planting native species. Commissioner Kelly said an individual identified as Mr. Fadnis, founder of an organization referenced as Way 0, is scheduled to speak to the commission in February about habitat work.
On STEM engagement, the commission will send a poll to members to collect availability for three regional competitions and expects to staff check-in and setup for at least one or two events. Commissioners are also attempting to recruit local robotics coaches and FTC San Diego leadership to speak at a commission meeting.
The Arts initiative reported that the Youth Arts Commission is still accepting applications and commissioners were asked to share the application link with school arts teachers. Commissioner Kinselberg reported school-specific events and a food drive partnership with CRC, a local food pantry. Commissioners discussed outreach for the annual holiday parade and thanked youth volunteers for leading the parade, which Parks Recreation and Cultural Arts said included 106 entries in 2024.
Service Manager Hamer provided department updates: Pacific View Arts Center hosted a recent open house, and upcoming community events include Music by the Sea on Jan. 25 (San Diego Music Society), a youth piano concerto competition with video submissions due March 26, the spring egg hunt on April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Arbor Day in April (date to be announced), and Movie in the Park on May 3. Hamer said staff met with IT and youth commissioners to explore adding geocaching elements to city events; approvals and additional steps were required before implementation.
No formal policy endorsements or new directives were adopted during the meeting; commissioners were asked to volunteer for events and to respond to scheduling polls so staff can confirm dates and participation.
