Le Mars reports ongoing park repairs, campground work after summer floods

City staff reported continued cleanup and repairs to parks, campgrounds and ponds after summer flooding, including tree removal, bridge and fence repairs, new camper pads and planned pond restocking by the Iowa DNR.
Le Mars city staff told the council that cleanup and repairs from this summer’s flood remain underway across multiple parks and recreation sites.
City parks staff reported that trees supplied through a Mid America grant were planted at the dog park and that most garden beds at Shaffer Park were removed and seeded for future renovations. Contractors and city crews have been coordinating cleanup, repairs to trail bridges and replacement of fencing damaged in the flood, and work on a railroad canopy associated with the trail is planned for spring.
Parks staff said high winds this summer damaged buildings and trees; crews continue removal and cleanup. A new backstop was installed at Bolsa Park, the convention center exterior and shelter houses at Cleveland and West Floyd parks were repainted, and landscaping and repairs were completed around west dock areas after docks were welded and reinstalled.
In the north campground, new camper pads and electrical wiring were installed after flood damage; water service was restored and water lines repaired. Staff described hydroseeding work on a reconstructed pond bank and reseeding of new campground grass that crews kept watered into the fall.
Cemetery activity was reported: Memorial Cemetery had nine full burials, 13 ash burials and 19 lots sold; West Haven Cemetery had five full burials, four ash burials and nine lots sold. City staff said the Iowa Department of Natural Resources placed a few catfish in ponds this fall and will return in the spring to restock bass, bluegill and catfish.
Council members asked whether a fish kill had been conducted during pond repairs; staff said the ponds were drained enough to avoid a kill and that anglers were catching bass during the period. On the railroad canopy, staff said they have heard nothing new from the railroad and expect that replacement work will be a spring project.
The updates were presented as part of routine department reports; no formal council action was taken at this meeting.
