North Lauderdale commissioners signal consensus to adopt Granicus agenda system and refine meeting format

City of North Lauderdale commissioners at a workshop discussed switching the city’s meeting streaming and agenda-management system to Granicus and agreed, by consensus, to continue planning implementation and a revised agenda format.
The discussion focused on sample agendas from Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Lighthouse Point, North Miami, Oakland Park, Sunrise and Broward County. City Manager staff explained how an agenda-management system would change internal workflow, require training for department staff and allow the commission to do agenda review earlier in the week.
"And that's why we decided to go with Granicus," the city manager said while describing the platform's support and user-friendliness. The manager said the system would create a structured workflow: departments would prepare agenda items in the system, procurement and other reviewing departments would receive alerts, the city attorney would review items within the workflow, and the city clerk would then publish the agenda.
Commissioners compared features of other cities' agendas. One commissioner said, "I like their format. And I like North Miami," when asked which municipalities to draw from for a combined format. Commissioners agreed a hybrid of Lauderdale Lakes and North Miami features would be acceptable to some members.
Staff and commissioners discussed timing and next steps. The city manager said training for department staff and commissioners would be part of the rollout and suggested the city aim to begin using Granicus by the last commission meeting in March. The commission asked staff to prepare a spreadsheet comparing features of the sample agendas so commissioners could more easily identify preferred elements; staff agreed to include that spreadsheet in the packet for the next meeting.
Staff also announced logistical items related to continuing process: the next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25 (staff indicated a tentative 4 p.m. start), and the spreadsheet comparing municipal agenda features will be prepared for the commission packet for that meeting. The manager noted that implementation requires departments to prepare items earlier in the process so items can move through procurement and legal review before publication.
No formal vote was taken at the workshop. Commissioners indicated consensus to proceed with the implementation steps described by staff, including training, the comparative spreadsheet and further agenda-format decisions at a future meeting.
Commissioners and staff also discussed practical impacts: moving some consent items earlier in the meeting, adding department reports, and setting time limits for presentations or proclamations as some sample cities do. The city clerk (Susan) and other staff will coordinate training and the technical setup in Granicus.
Meeting housekeeping noted Commissioner Lewis arrived at 4:56 p.m. Staff reminded the commission that two additional items will be on the Feb. 25 workshop agenda: discussion of the IGM medium contract and an item regarding a pallet house in the Broadview/Pompano Park area.
The workshop ended with staff directed to prepare the comparative spreadsheet, schedule training for staff and department heads, and return with any formal action items as needed for future commission consideration.
