Evansville approves CDBG-funded upgrades for United Caring Shelters to improve kitchen and accessibility

The Evansville Board of Public Works on Jan. 16 approved two contracts with United Caring Shelters Inc. (doing business as United Caring Services) to fund facility upgrades paid from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
One contract covers installation of an accessible door and ramp; the contract amount is $21,980.87. A second contract covers replacement of a large industrial dishwasher and a garbage disposal at the shelter for $26,368.74. Combined, the two contracts total $48,349.61.
Christine Pryor of the Department of Metropolitan Development told the board the replacements are intended to allow the shelter to “prepare healthy meals for some of the homeless that they shelter there” and to make the entry “more accessible so that when these people are coming in that, it's safe and secure for them.” Pryor said DMD had met with United Caring Shelters in prior months, validated the quotes and informed contractors that projects funded with CDBG monies must adhere to Davis‑Bacon requirements.
Pryor also said a third contract for HVAC work is likely to come later this year.
Board members asked whether DMD had verified contractor quotes. Pryor replied that DMD staff (identified in the transcript as Haley) had reviewed and validated the quotes prior to the items coming to the board.
The board approved both contracts by voice vote.
