Human Relations Commission backs Palo Alto community Ramadan Iftar; support passes unanimously

The Palo Alto Human Relations Commission voted unanimously Feb. 28 to support the Palo Alto Annual Community Ramadan Iftar dinner after hearing from event organizers during the meeting's public-comment portion.

Organizers described the Iftar as a family-friendly gathering that aims to help Muslim residents and their children feel included in the community and to foster interfaith understanding. "At its heart, the iftar is about sharing a meal, learning about Ramadan, and experiencing the joy of breaking fast together at sunset," said Uzma, one of the speakers who identified herself as representing the event.

The organizers told commissioners the event again this year would include food from local restaurants and outreach to Palo Alto Unified School District families. A second public commenter said the event had helped her children feel "seen in the community that we call home." Commissioners asked questions about etiquette and logistics; one commissioner asked whether attending the dinner if a commissioner had not fasted would violate religious expectations and was told it would not.

Before the vote, staff reminded commissioners about Brown Act limits on communications among members when they attend community events. Vice Chair Krause advised commissioners that if they attend together they should be careful not to discuss HRC business so as to avoid creating a serial meeting.

Motion and vote: The commission made a motion to support the Palo Alto Annual Community Ramadan Iftar dinner; the motion was seconded and the chair took a roll call vote. The minutes record the vote as: Commissioner Barr, Aye; Commissioner Causey, Aye; Commissioner Eberly, Aye; Commissioner Shea, Aye; Chair Stimler, Aye. The motion passed.

Commissioners and staff thanked the organizers for their work in bringing the event to the city and for arranging translation and accessibility supports. The event organizers said translation would be available via a city-provided phone app and that presenters from Catholic Charities, the Asian Law Alliance, and Palo Alto libraries would participate in related immigrant-rights and outreach efforts.

The commission did not commit city funding as a cosponsor; commissioners repeatedly clarified that "support" is distinct from city co-sponsorship, which requires a formal co-sponsorship application and potentially use of city facilities or other gifts of city resources.

The commission then moved on to the next agenda item.
