Montezuma County IT staff proposes $30,000 acquisition of used servers, highlights new network ring and T‑Mobile switch

Montezuma County IT staff told commissioners they can acquire four used servers from a vendor that is exiting server hosting for about $30,000 and repurpose them for county infrastructure.
The county’s IT staff said the systems are “basically the same exact servers as our VxRail” and would replace aging equipment in several racks. “I can get all 4 of them for 30,” the IT presenter said, adding that the county had budgeted for purchasing two new servers this year and that taking the four used machines represented significant savings compared with buying new equipment.
The county IT representative also described recent work to finish a countywide network ring that provides redundancy for county buildings. That ring allowed most county services to remain online during a recent, unannounced power outage at an annex, the presenter said: “If we lose connectivity somewhere, we don't lose connectivity.”
County IT additionally reported that the sheriff’s office, public health, social services and administration have switched their cellular service to T‑Mobile. The presenter said the migration appears to be working and that he expects lower long‑term costs and easier management: “I think in the end, this is gonna be the right move for us.”
Commissioners and staff asked logistical questions about where the servers would be stored and confirmed the purchase fits within the IT capital budget. The presenter said the donated/used servers would be kept on site in a county rack and used to replace several end‑of‑life servers.
No formal vote or contract signature was recorded during the workshop. Staff said they would move forward with the arrangement and follow up through regular budget and procurement channels.
Why it matters: Replacing aging servers and completing the network ring reduces single points of failure for county services (including the sheriff’s office and social services) and could save capital expenses compared with buying new equipment. The cellular‑service change affects multiple departments and may reduce ongoing operating costs.
