Deputy Chief Simon Pang reported to the San Francisco Fire Commission on Feb. 12 that ambulance patient offload time (APOT) and hospital delays are creating operational strain and reducing ambulance availability.
Pang said ambulance call volume was up and that the department’s ambulances handled more than 9,000 responses in January, giving the department roughly a 78% market share of ambulance dispatches. He said APOT problems in January included 1,366 delays between 45 minutes and one hour, 863 delays between 60 and 90 minutes, 146 delays up to two hours and 87 delays over two hours. “That's the equivalent of 8 ambulances per day,” Pang said of events where ambulances were…
