Graham County accepts $480,000 in SB 1720 board support funds for patrol vehicles, license-plate readers and equipment

The Graham County Board of Supervisors voted to accept $480,000 in local board support funding related to SB 1720 for law enforcement on Feb. 3.
Sheriff PJ Allred told the board the funds could be used for a range of law-enforcement needs and requested formal acceptance. "What we're here is we're asking for an approval to accept local board support funding related to the SB 1720 in the amount of $480,000," Allred said.
The county attorney's office clarified the grant required the board to specify intended uses. County staff said the primary plan is to buy patrol vehicles for Graham County and to outfit them with computers and related equipment. The package presented to the board also set aside funding for license-plate reader and "flock" systems for Safford and Thatcher and two grappler units for the Town of Pima.
Under-sheriff McCormick, who takes a lead role on grant writing for the sheriff's office, explained why vehicles are typical uses for this type of funding, saying the money helps cover the cost of getting a vehicle into the fleet. Supervisor comments noted two of the vehicles listed in the board packet will be unmarked.
Board members made a motion to accept the funds and approved it by voice vote; the motion passed unanimously on the record.
The board did not specify exact vehicle counts or a purchase schedule in the Feb. 3 discussion. Sheriff Allred and county staff said they would follow procurement rules and return with details as purchases are planned.
