Committee approves revised broadcast policy; staff aim to begin streaming after council adoption

The Transparency, Engagement and Communication Committee voted to accept an updated broadcast policy that would allow the city to stream meetings in real time across the city’s existing platforms.

Jeron Hollis, managing director, told the committee that the council approved the installation of equipment and software in April 2024 and that the updated policy is "the last step" needed to begin streaming. Hollis said staffing is in place and that, after full-council approval and a short practice period, staff hoped to start broadcasting by the second March council meeting.

Councilman Patrick Harmon moved to accept the policy; Mayor Pro Tem Britt Moore seconded. The committee chair called for a voice vote. "Aye. Any opposed? That motion carries," the chair said. The committee did not record a roll-call or a numerical tally in the meeting transcript.

Hollis said the public rollout would use standard communications channels and that the change "doesn't change how we do the meetings — it's just making the meetings more accessible in a different way to the public." He said the city expects media interest after council approval and would use social and other outreach to notify residents how to tune in.

The committee forwarded the policy to the full council for consideration; staff indicated the policy change is administrative and that no additional staffing hires were required before broadcasts begin. The meeting record shows the committee approved the motion by voice; no further formal actions related to the policy were taken at the committee meeting.
