Truckee emergency manager urges residents to 'expect the unexpected' as winter nears

The Town of Truckee’s emergency manager urged residents to prepare for a volatile winter that could include both dry periods and intense storm events, and outlined the town’s readiness work and what residents should do to prepare.
At a Dec. 10 Town Council meeting, the emergency manager summarized pre‑winter coordination with Public Works, Caltrans and Nevada County and said the town is establishing a permanent sandbag location and strengthening outreach to short‑term rental owners and visitors. "We're going to stick with the expect the unexpected because even if we do have a relatively dry winter, we could still see major storm events that are very impactful," the emergency manager said.
The town held pre‑winter coordination meetings with Public Works and the Office of Emergency Services and reported improved Public Works staffing and fleet readiness. Staff also said they have assessed evacuation‑shelter capacity with partners including the Red Cross and Nevada County Public Health and have plans to support county sheltering for unhoused residents.
The manager emphasized personal preparedness: stock food, water, fuel for generators, medical supplies, flashlights and warm clothing; check vehicle fuel and emergency kits before travel; and practice carbon‑monoxide safety when using generators or alternate heating sources. He also urged neighbors to check on one another during an event and reminded residents to sign up for CodeRED emergency alerts.
On community outreach, staff said they are sharing winter information with the Chamber and short‑term rental owners so visitors receive guidance on winter driving and safety. The town will announce the sandbag location and activation plan when ready.
