Smith told the board Sports Bowl and community supporters had pushed for a program for several years and the district recently collected student interest data. The survey showed interest from both genders but lower top‑level interest among girls; Smith said 6 players are needed to field a varsity team. "If the survey data held true and we were only Nevada, we would be able to support a boys team at a varsity level, and the girls would... have to be stitched together," Smith said.
Smith described benefits including opportunities for students who are not otherwise involved in activities, scholarship possibilities and a lifetime activity students can continue after high school. He also outlined concerns: current survey responses were lower than he would prefer, recruitment will be needed, and forming a cooperative team with nearby districts could change the class (1A to 2A) in which Nevada would compete, potentially affecting competitiveness at state events.
Operational details discussed included practices held at Sports Bowl immediately after school (roughly 3:30–5:30 p.m.), initial expectations for a single head coach to oversee both boys and girls, Booster Club interest and that the district had not yet identified a head coach. Smith said Sports Bowl owner Scott Walkner is expected to work with the program on scheduling and access.
Board members discussed co‑op history in other sports (wrestling) and cautioned that accepting a small number of students from another district could push Nevada into a higher class for postseason competition. Smith said any co‑op would be evaluated based on how many students the partner would add.
A board member moved to initiate the bowling program for 2025–26; a second was recorded and the board voted in favor.
The program will begin recruiting and the district will return with staffing and scheduling details once a coach is identified and participation levels are confirmed.
