Council orders humane destruction of dog after two child bite incidents

The Indianola City Council determined an animal to be vicious and authorized humane destruction after police presented reports that the dog had bitten two separate children in the face within a short time frame and showed aggressive behavior while impounded.

Police officer Kevin presented the department's findings: "Milo, the dog in question had bitten the child on the face. The child required stitches on their face to mend the wound," he said, describing the January incident and a subsequent Feb. 10 incident in which a different child also received stitches. Kevin said the dog was quarantined after the first bite and later impounded by animal control after the second incident; animal-control staff reported difficulty handling and transporting the dog and observed aggressive behavior while the dog was at the shelter.

Council members discussed owner responsibility and public safety. Several members recounted personal experiences or concerns about children returning to a household with a dog that had bitten. One council member said the incident suggested poor ownership and observed that attempts to rehome the animal had been made despite the two bites. The council then voted to accept the police recommendation and ordered humane destruction of the animal. The vote passed with council members recorded as voting "aye."
