Hudsonville schools staff, counselors and board cite grief supports after two recent deaths

Board members and administrators described an emotionally difficult week after the district lost two community members: a recent graduate (listed in the meeting as a student who graduated in 2021) and a long‑time staff member. Speakers thanked school counselors, building administrators, the district crisis team and community partners for supporting students and staff.

At the start of the meeting an administrator asked for a moment of silence for the families most affected. Several board members and building leaders recounted the work of counselors and the crisis team in reaching students quickly, supporting staff and coordinating with families.

High‑school and building administrators described the impact on students: staff and counselors were on the front lines the week the deaths were announced, and administrators said they relied on an internal crisis plan and support from community members. One building leader said about the counselors: “They were the ones that were kind of the front lines of helping students that were grieving.” Another administrator thanked community partners and named staff for their work supporting bereaved students and families.

Board members publicly recognized the staff member who died as someone who “represented the best of Hudsonville,” thanked staff for how they rallied around students and asked members to sign the previously adopted Code of Conduct before leaving.
