Superintendent says district won $3.5M CTEC grant; middle school renovation funded, evacuation drills planned

CTEC grant: Meyer said the district won $3.5 million from a state Career Technical Education grant to establish a CTEC (Career Technical Education Center of North Idaho). The center will offer programs such as residential carpentry, health occupations, automotive bay space (equipment to be supplied by community partners), information technology and culinary arts. Meyer said the district moved the CTEC to the south end of Sandpoint High School after community partners recommended locating the program where students who lack transportation can more easily attend. Groundwork to move a portable and begin construction is planned for summer, and Meyer said the facility could open as early as the 2026–27 school year depending on weather and construction timelines.
Middle school renovation: Meyer said the district received funding through House Bill 521 and the district board approved starting with Sandpoint Middle School, with $18.2 million allocated for a complete renovation. That project is in planning and design, with an expected phased schedule that could result in occupancy in fall 2028.
Safety drills: Meyer said the district has never run a full district-wide evacuation and reunification drill and that the district completed a first-time drill at Clark Fork High School without incident. She said the district plans to run full evacuation and reunification drills for Sandpoint High School and Sandpoint Middle School within the next three years and will coordinate with local police and fire.

Meyer said home-schooled and out-of-district students can apply to the CTEC under open enrollment rules and said the district will seek community partnership support for equipment not covered by the grant.
No council action was taken; councilors thanked the superintendent and encouraged early coordination with city planning and building staff on construction timelines.
