Mayor Coleman outlines park, fire station and pond projects; announces hazardous‑waste day and festival dates

Nankin Square and Amphitheatre: Coleman said work began in August 2024 and remains on schedule for potential completion this fall. The 3.7‑acre park will include nature and adventure play areas, an amphitheatre, gardens, boardwalks, walking trails and an events plaza. The city has an agreement with Westland Mall for overflow parking across from the park and will add on‑street handicap parking for direct access.
Fire Station 2: The mayor said the nearly 13,000‑square‑foot Fire Station 2 is in the final stages of construction and will house engine 2, rescue 2, fire administration offices and a training command center. He said the facility will allow the city to complete state‑required continuing education locally rather than sending firefighters to Livonia and Taylor, improving response capabilities.
Taylor Towers pond reopening: The pond was closed in 2007 after a state environmental agency found contamination; the mayor said his administration worked with consultants and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to remediate the site, adding clean soil and re‑grading eight acres. He said the area has reopened with signage prohibiting fishing, swimming, boating and skating and warning of deep water.
Other announcements: Wayne County household hazardous waste day will be Saturday, Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westland Mall. The mayor invited residents to a free community movie night Thursday, Aug. 28, at Corrado Park. He also announced a craft beer and wine festival Sept. 13 at Central City Park (early‑bird $30 tickets include samples and a commemorative cup) and the mayor's state of the city address Sept. 9 at the new Fire Station 2 (RSVP requested). The official ribbon cutting for Fire Station 2 is planned for Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
Coleman reiterated this work is intended to improve park amenities, training capacity for emergency responders and neighborhood access to city facilities. No formal council vote was required for the project updates announced during his remarks.
