Council Member Natalie Pinkney confirmed at the Dec. meeting that Dec. 31 will be her last day as a member of the South Salt Lake City Council. Applications to fill the at-large midterm vacancy will be accepted beginning Jan. 2, and, under state law, the council has 30 days to make an appointment, the city said.
The council will appoint an interim council member who will serve until the seat is filled by voters in the municipal election on Nov. 4, 2025; the person elected in that election will take office in January 2026. City offices and the city website will carry details about the application process, the council said.
The item drew public comment and council remarks thanking Pinkney for five years of service. Resident Susan Bolden told the council, “First tonight, I want to thank Natalie Pinkney for her service in South Salt Lake. She has been a brilliant councilwoman,” and urged the council not to shorten public-comment time when several residents wish to speak. Mayor Mary Wood presented a plaque to Pinkney and city leaders recognized her service during council comments.
Nut graf: The vacancy triggers a state-timed process to fill a city council seat by council appointment for the remainder of 2025, with a public application period beginning Jan. 2 and a council vote required within 30 days. That appointment will be temporary until the regularly scheduled municipal election determines the long-term occupant of the seat.
Council members and residents used the meeting to both note the vacancy timetable and to thank Pinkney. Pinkney said she will continue as council member through Dec. 31 and encouraged people to run for local office, saying, “Local touches you way more than the federal government.”
The city’s public calendar shows the next council meeting is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 8, 2025; the council also noted upcoming holiday closures and curbside Christmas tree collection in January.
Ending: The city will publish application details on the city website; the council’s public interview and vote for an interim appointee are scheduled for Jan. 22, 2025, according to public remarks at the meeting.
