Planning commission grants small front-setback variance for Athens Boat Club home

The Dawson County Planning Commission voted to grant a setback variance (VA 25-17) allowing a 30-foot reduction from the required 35-foot front setback so a front porch can be built at 386 Holly Circle in the Athens Boat Club subdivision.
Applicant Howard Lindner said the dwelling has existed for about 40 years and sits within the current setback; the proposed porch measures 24 feet wide by 8 feet deep. Lindner told the commission that the subdivision’s narrow lots and private roads make front porches a common feature and that the porch would improve safety by keeping activity off the roadway.
No speakers registered opposition. The motion to approve carried 3–0. The commission’s recommendation grants the reduction so the new porch may be permitted under the conditions discussed.
