Board reviews new 'Improve Your Tomorrow' mentoring agreement; trustees ask for references

Jackson Public Schools presented an information-only memorandum to establish a new partnership with Improve Your Tomorrow to mentor 100 scholars (50 at Blackburn and 50 at Powell Middle School) through a college-academy model.
The administration said mentors would engage students in academic study sessions, social-emotional learning, family engagement workshops and college tours. District staff confirmed the program would be funded through outside grant funds and would not use district operating dollars.
When trustees asked whether the district had obtained external references or evidence of the program’s track record in other districts, administrators said Improve Your Tomorrow is a new engagement for JPS. The presentation noted the organization has worked in other states such as California but that district staff had not completed formal reference checks prior to the board presentation.
Trustees requested that the administration provide external references, geographic base and other background on the organization and its results before asking the board for formal approval of any contract.
The administration agreed to collect references and return with additional background prior to the June 17 meeting noted during the discussion.
