Cecil County Public Schools recognizes Carson Scholars, names Taylor Schafer teacher of the year and appoints student member Addison Metcalfe

Dozens of students received recognition as 2025 Carson Scholars at the Board of Education meeting May 21, and the board presented the district’s Teacher of the Year award before voting to appoint the incoming student member of the board.
Carson Scholars and awards: Dr. Sean Johnson, executive director for elementary education, led recognition of students across multiple grade levels who qualified as Carson Scholars — a program requiring a minimum 3.75 GPA and demonstration of humanitarian qualities. Students from elementary, middle and high schools were recognized, including multiple renewals up to seven and nine years in some cases. The board paused to applaud each student and invited group photographs in the lobby.
Teacher of the Year: Taylor Schafer, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Northeast Middle School, was named CCPS Teacher of the Year. Colleagues and union representatives praised Schafer for classroom innovation, subject enthusiasm and student engagement. Schafer said the recognition was an honor and highlighted the final weeks of the school year: “We have 16 days of school left…days like this make our year memorable. I look forward to the next year representing Cecil County Public Schools,” she said.
Student member appointment: The board voted to appoint Addison Metcalfe, a rising junior at Rising Sun High School, as the student member of the board for 2025–26. The motion to appoint Metcalfe carried unanimously. Board members said the student member will shadow the current student member, Ms. Griffin, before taking the role in July.

The Carson Scholars recognition highlights academic achievement and community service across the district. The Teacher of the Year award spotlights classroom practice; the appointment of a student member preserves student representation on the board and establishes a transition plan for the incoming member.
