Board approves Minnesota State High School League co-op expansion to add Pine Island

The Stewartville Public School District board unanimously approved a pair of resolutions to dissolve an existing Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) cooperative and form a new cooperative that adds Pine Island, the superintendent said.
Ms. Silvers explained the action dissolves the prior cooperative relationship among Lourdes, Stewartville, Schafer and Dover Ryota (as listed in the agenda) and replaces it with a new agreement that includes Pine Island. The district's activities director and a member of the coaching staff supported the change, she said. Board members noted the cooperative allows students to participate in sports the district does not field on its own.
Board members described the change as a sponsorship and application process through MSHSL; the resolution was presented so the district could submit the formal application. Mr. Ravenhorst moved to approve the dual resolution (dissolution and formation of the new cooperative); Mr. Geist seconded. The motion passed on a 7-0 voice vote.
During the discussion one board member noted the cooperative in question is for boys' participation in the listed sport(s); district staff confirmed the cooperation had been previously restructured for girls at an earlier time because of participation levels.
The board will submit the cooperative application to the MSHSL as the next administrative step.
