Chesterfield schools outline reading intersession, CTE activities and upcoming events

A district curriculum presenter outlined multiple instructional programs and upcoming events during the board meeting, including a targeted reading intersession for third graders, career-technical education activities and fine-arts programming.
The presenter said tenth graders at one high school participated in a Mad City Money exercise that simulated adult financial decisions and unexpected expenses. Elementary and middle school teachers have been reviewing state-approved math instructional series; individual schools will vote on a preferred publisher in coming weeks, and the district will request board approval of the selected series at its March meeting.
Intercession (a district reading adventure week) is scheduled for February 24–28, with five sites named: Sherrill Intermediate, Pageland Elementary, Matvey Elementary, Jefferson Elementary and Ruby Elementary. The presenter said principals and teachers reached out to families and that “we have over a hundred students that are going to participate” in the countywide program; the presenter described the sessions as small-group, individualized instruction for third graders.
The presenter also highlighted fine-arts activity: a media-specialist professional development session, and a School Arts Commission grant awarded to Melanie Cole to purchase new sound equipment for her school. The All-County Fine Arts Festival is scheduled in March, and a choral concert is set for March 6 at 6:30 p.m. The district will host a job fair on March 8 at the Palmetto Learning Center.
Superintendent Dr. Anderson provided additional announcements: a community soup-kitchen event hosted at Saint Paul United Methodist Church and schedule notes for an in-service day and a makeup day for a January snow closure. He congratulated Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School’s academic team for winning the division 2 championship at a recent middle-school academic challenge and recognized Miss Young, named principal of the year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrative Association.
The presenter tied the reading intersession to the district’s emphasis on third-grade reading outcomes, saying the program “falls in line with the new third grade” policy that sets promotion expectations; the presenter and the superintendent said summer-school options will provide additional support for students who need help beyond intercession.
