Del City’s economic development director told the council on Feb. 3 that the city is beginning to see new private investment, including multiple business openings and near‑term store commencements.
Kyle Gandy said the city recorded seven occupancy/permit actions in January and that two new daycares opened in the month — developments city staff said they need. He reported that a Boot Barn sign permit was issued last Friday and the store’s sign was installed on Feb. 3; the business is awaiting fire inspections and final stocking before a likely opening in a few weeks.
Gandy also recognized new and returning small retailers and said the city’s presence at a recent ICSC conference in Dallas is already producing leads. He told trustees he expects additional development announcements “in the coming days to weeks.”
Why it matters: New daycares can affect workforce participation for parents and signal retailer interest; the arrival of national or regional chains such as Boot Barn would increase sales tax revenue and visibility along Sunny Lane and I‑40 corridors.
Other economic development notes from the meeting: - Dining in Del City recognition: Casa Juanito (4718 SE 29th Street) was presented as the Dining in Del City recipient for February; staff will deliver a signed certificate. - Business support: City staff said community outreach at trade shows and direct contact with developers is returning results, and staff emphasized continued outreach to attract retail and services.
What’s next: Staff will continue coordinated recruitment and will present formal economic development project announcements when contracts or leases are finalized.
