Board committee advances rewritten instructional, curriculum and counseling policies to first reading

The Livonia Public Schools policy committee reviewed rewritten board policies and supporting administrative procedures on Jan. 21 and moved them forward for first reading at the next regular meeting.

Mrs. O’Brien presented revised drafts intended to replace several long-standing policies the district said were outdated. The documents reviewed included a rewritten instructional goals and objectives policy, a revised curriculum-development policy and a rewritten counseling and student-assistance policy along with updated administrative procedures.

On the instructional goals draft, O’Brien read the proposed language describing the district’s educational aims from preschool through post-secondary and trustees thanked staff for rewriting the older policy rather than making piecemeal edits. Trustees suggested a wording change to clarify budget responsibility; the committee agreed to amend language so the district will provide time, resources and professional development "within the allocated budget approved by the Board of Education." The change will appear in the first-reading packet.

Trustees also reviewed the curriculum-development rewrite and discussed how the board, superintendent and administration interact on budgeted curriculum work. On the counseling and student-assistance policy staff replaced an older “guidance” policy and clarified scope; in response to a board concern staff agreed to make the language explicitly school-based so the district’s school counselors and student-assistance providers are identified as the source of services covered by policy.

Administrative procedures accompanying the counseling policy were edited during the meeting: trustees asked that wording be tightened to emphasize school-based counseling services, change references from "vocational training" to "career technical" programs, and correct minor spelling errors. Trustees requested that the procedures shift a subsection header so that the list reads as counselor and student-assistance provider services rather than a broader, unconditional district obligation.

The revised policies and administrative procedures will appear on the board’s first-reading agenda at the next regular meeting. No final policies were adopted at the committee session.
