During public comment at the Jan. 28 Spartanburg City Council meeting, resident Madoff Kumar urged elected leaders to invest in public transportation, specifically buses, to reduce traffic and improve intra-city connections.
Kumar introduced himself and said he has lived in Spartanburg most of his life and that, "as a part of that growth, I think something that everyone here has experienced has been that increase in traffic." He said the city’s history as a transportation hub makes expanding efficient public transit a logical step. "I would just like to sort of make a case or a plea to, for our city to think about investing in our public transportation resources, in particular buses," Kumar said.
Kumar acknowledged that such projects would not be cheap but pointed to recent local infrastructure projects, including courthouse work and an upcoming Daniel Morgan project, as evidence the city can undertake complex engineering and infrastructure efforts. Council did not take formal action on the public comment but staff and council members thanked Kumar for raising the issue.
No staff presentation or immediate follow-up was scheduled during the meeting; the comment was placed in the public-comment portion of the agenda.
