Consent agenda tabled after split vote; community commenters praise teacher workday and raise concern about ASU Prep lease

The board did not adopt the consent agenda at this meeting after a split vote and will return the item for later consideration.

During the consent roll call the motion to approve the consent agenda failed on a 2–2 vote and the chair stated the consent agenda would be tabled for a later meeting. One board member who identified herself as new said she lacked internal information needed to vote in favor and requested tabling.

During the public-comment period several district staff submitted electronic comments thanking the district and PECTA for a teacher workday immediately after winter break. Teachers said the post-break workday allowed planning, collaboration and rest before students returned and that the change improved teacher effectiveness and wellbeing. Comments were submitted by staff identified as classroom teachers and PECTA officers; each comment is recorded in the meeting materials.

An in-person commenter representing ASU Preparatory Academies said ASU Prep and the district have partnered for more than 15 years and asked the board to table a lease-related agenda item (referenced in the meeting materials) so that affected families and staff have opportunity to comment. The speaker said the timing of the district's agenda update meant families learned of the change through the board agenda and urged the board to delay action and allow broader input.

The board moved to other closing items after tabling the consent agenda and then adjourned the meeting.
