EDC approves beautification spending for community pool and water-park project

The Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation approved beautification expenses for the community pool and water-park project (Work Plan project 2025-01), moving the concept designs and early invoices forward.
Staff presented proposed plans and renderings showing new restrooms, a small concession building, a walking trail, replacement barbecue pits, and potential recreation courts (beach volleyball or pickleball) along with a splash pad and cementing of the pool area. "So on the project you'll see, there will be some restrooms added to the property, some convenient concession stand type of building where they could store snacks or there's also going to be a small walking trail, Barbecue pits will be replaced," the parks/staff presenter said.
Directors were told that the EDC had designated $150,000 in the work plan for the project. Staff said the Parks and Recreation crew has already begun site cleanup and that the scope may be adjusted (for example, number and type of courts) as final bids and contractor proposals arrive. The board approved the item by voice vote.
Staff also noted coordination steps with local historic preservation and possible design elements to preserve historic character in features such as stone barbecue elements. Directors discussed a target to have the project ready by the following summer if procurement and work proceed on schedule.
The action authorizes staff to move forward with the beautification scope as presented and to continue procuring design and construction proposals.
