Kelly Arnold, Sedgwick County clerk, briefed the commission on Jan. 22 about the county clerk’s outreach and in‑office assistance for the state homestead property tax refund programs.
Arnold said there are three rebate programs with separate eligibility rules: the standard homestead program (eligibility for homeowners age 55 or older, those with a dependent or residents who are permanently disabled/blind and income limits), a "safe seniors" program for residents age 65 and older with income limits, and a program for senior and disabled veterans. She said staff can help applicants decide which program fits their situation and that the office helped 285 people last year; as of the meeting they had helped 52 people for the current filing year.
Arnold said residents may bring documents to the County Clerk’s Office on the sixth floor of the Ruffin Building weekdays 8 a.m.–4 p.m. (except holidays) through April 15; no appointment is required and help is free. Applicants may elect to have refunds applied to tax statements, direct‑deposited, or mailed as checks. Chair Beatty and other commissioners encouraged staff to use communications channels to raise awareness that the deadline is April 15.
